Governor Amos Nyaribo has called on  Nyamira youth to enroll in Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), saying his Administration is offering full and partial scholarships, easing the fees burden.

In his Madaraka Day speech read on behalf by the CECM for Education and ICT Emilly Ongaga, the governor said poverty must not hinder the youth from accessing critical skills for self-employment.

Governor Nyaribo said that a lot of investment has been done on VTCs, enabling them to offer the best skills as the county bets of entrepreneurship as one of the avenues of building a strong and resilient economy.

“While acknowledging the financial challenges of parents, my administration is paying KES 15,000 in partial scholarships annually for every trainee in VTCs. The next intake for full scholarship under Nyamira County and KCB Foundation partnership is ongoing,” read his speech.

He said the partial scholarship reduces the school fees by half for the more than 2,000 trainees and making education affordable and accessible.

As the county marked the 63rd Madaraka Day at Riabore Primary School in Rigoma Ward, Governor Nyaribo said education is the bedrock of sustainable development through empowerment of the youth, which is in line with this year’s theme.

He highlighted the partnership with the KCB Foundation, which has so far trained over 660 trainees saying start up kits will be given to best performers.

“Upon a joint graduation in June 18, 2026, start-up kits costing up to KES 40,000 will be given to 100 top scorers in diverse trades,” Nyaribo said.

The Governor said direct support to VTC trainees has been proposed to rise from KES 40 million in the 2025/2026 financial year to KES 50 million in 2026/2027 budget.

“We are making such heavy investments in education because it is the most sustainable way of spurring development and eradicating poverty,” Nyaribo emphasized.

In yet another initiative targeting to empower the youth, the Governor said the Youth Digital Empowerment Programme at the Nyamira ICT Hub has equipped more than 100 students with online job market skills.

The Nyamira County Scholarships Programme has also recorded success, with 235 students sitting KCSE in 2025 and achieving an 85 percent transition to university, including 13 who scored straight A’s.

On the UjiAfya  Masomo Bora Programme, the Governor said it is a major milestone in improving learning outcomes.

The event was attended by the new County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo, Deputy County Commissioner Stella Wanyela and other county offcials.
