Parents have been asked to nurture and guide their children properly in the wake of school unrest currently being witnessed in the country.
Speaking during the SDA Nyamira West Field fundraiser for the proposed Nyamira West Field Hospital, Nyamira gubernatorial aspirant Walter Chanua said teachers alone cannot mold children the way parents would wish.
He said that both parents and school administrations should join hands to ensure discipline is instilled in school-going children to prevent chaos in schools.
“It is the responsibility of parents to take good care of their children. The responsibility of the teacher is to teach and mold students academically,” Chanua said.
He added that what the country is currently witnessing is a failure of parents to nurture their children properly so that they grow up to be responsible adults.
He lauded the Adventist church for its teachings, including child guidance, which helps children fit into the kingdom of God.
He noted that democracy in the church and at home has led children to know their rights and what is good for them.
“If they are left alone and given an opportunity to make decisions without guidance, then they are bound to be misled through the decisions they make,” he told the congregation.
If parents do not bear the responsibility of taking care of their children, he warned, there will be no future generation to speak of.
“We must take care of our children, guide them, and teach them the virtues that are acceptable in society,” said Chanua.
Walter Chanua, who is a top contender in the 2027 gubernatorial race in Nyamira County, has in the recent past grown to be a favorite of many because of his support for the community.
He has been actively engaged in supporting churches, building houses for the poor, and sponsoring students who lack school fees.
He, however, regrets that in 2022 he stepped down from the race following the death of the first governor of Nyamira County, John Nyagarama—a decision he says cost him a seat he would have otherwise won had he contested.
He told off those asking him to step down, saying this is the ripe time for him to take over the county leadership and restore its lost glory.
“Nyamira needs a young and energetic governor who understands the needs of the people and who will restore Nyamira to its lost glory,” he said.
Chanua, who currently works in Narok County’s finance department, considers himself a manager who will save Nyamira from the burdens of poor governance.
“I am coming home to lead this county and make it one of the best counties in the country in terms of development and service delivery to the people,” he announced.
He is also a successful agribusiness entrepreneur who prides himself as the perfect fit for Nyamira County.
“I am a livestock farmer keeping goats, poultry, and dairy cows in Narok, and I want to help Nyamira farmers practice what we call agribusiness,” he told the Adventist faithful.
Giving the example of the biblical Job, who was a farmer with no academic background yet succeeded as a steward of God, Chanua emphasized the value of service.
“What we are doing today is serving God. Supporting the construction of the hospital is key to bringing spirituality to the world,” he said.
He maintained that he will not change his mind to contest for a Member of Parliament or senatorial seat because he is uniquely qualified to lead as governor and serve the people of Nyamira as a whole.
“Let everybody walk in their own lane. I am a gubernatorial candidate,” he concluded.
