The Nyamira Water and Sewerage Company (NYAWASCO) has received a consignment of water distribution equipment as it prepares to roll out new household water connections across the county.
The equipment, supplied by the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWDA), was delivered today by the agency’s CEO, Jackline Momanyi, and received by Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo at the NYAWASCO offices.
The consignment includes digital smart meters, pipes, and other plumbing accessories.
Speaking to the press, Ms. Momanyi stated that the agency is fulfilling the President’s pledge to provide clean piped water to the residents of Nyamira Municipality.
She noted that the installation of the main water supply pipeline by the contractor is now in its final stages.
“Household connections will begin shortly. Residents living between Nyansabakwa Boys High School and the county headquarters, as well as those in Konate, Kebirigo, and Nyaramba, will be the first to benefit during this phase,” Momanyi announced.
She added that the subsequent phase will expand coverage to Sironga, Ting’a, Nyaikuro, and broader parts of Konate.
Receiving the equipment, Governor Amos Nyaribo lauded NYAWASCO’s progress, emphasizing his administration’s goal to make the utility financially independent.
“Our objective is to see NYAWASCO become fully self-sustaining and independent of county operational funding,” Governor Nyaribo said.
To support this transition, the Governor pledged that the county government would clear an outstanding Sh14 million electricity bill that has historically disrupted water supply operations.
To permanently lower operational overheads, Governor Nyaribo announced plans to transition major water facilities to solar power.
Once the solarization project is complete, electricity costs at the Kebirigo water intake, treatment plant, and booster station are expected to drop by more than 50 per cent.
Under the Last-Mile Connectivity Programme, a total of 2,000 new households will be connected to the grid.
The Governor received the first batch of 1,000 customized NYAWASCO digital meters today, with LVSWDA expected to deliver the remaining 1,000 meters soon.
Currently, about 5,000 households in Nyamira County have access to piped water.
During the flag-off ceremony, Governor Nyaribo highlighted that the county is working closely with LVSWDA to lay a 38-kilometer piping network to facilitate the expansion.
“Transitioning to solar energy will allow NYAWASCO to guarantee a continuous, 24-hour water supply while generating enough revenue to run its operations seamlessly,” the Governor concluded.
